On Remembrance Sunday, the President of Tavira Câmara Jorge Botelho, along with other local officials and former combatants, laid flowers at the War Memorial in the Praça da República.
Originally erected to commemorate the dead of the First World War, the memorial also commemorates those who died in the service of their country in the 50 years of war between 1918 and 1968.
Portugal entered the First World War in March 1916. Portugal sent an Expeditionary Force of 50,000 men to the Western Front in February 1917. They saw action for the first time on June 17 in Flanders and it is estimated that some 7,000 Portuguese combatants lost their lives.
Riverside Bar supports Poppy Appeal
More than €300 has been raised by patrons of the Riverside Bar in Tavira.
A lively quiz night resulted in Ted Fowles and his ‘Legless Three’ team taking top spot closely followed by the ‘Australia Bar’ and ‘Opium Den’ in third place. First prize in the Poppy Appeal raffle was won by Rhona Seaward of Luz de Tavira.
Danni Bain said: “Once again we’ve had a tremendous response and are confident of topping last year’s record amount. We regularly welcome servicemen and women in the bar and we know of their great acts of heroism. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the Appeal.” Chris Wright
