SUNDAY’S 2007/2008 season curtain-raiser at Wembley pitted Premiership champions Manchester United against FA Cup winners Chelsea in a replay of the latter competition’s final, played barely three months ago.
The winners then, Chelsea, fell behind to an early Ryan Giggs strike before equalising through Florent Malouda. The match remained tied until the end, forcing penalties, none of which José Mourinho’s men managed to convert, so handing Sir Alex Ferguson the first silverware of the season by a 3-0 spot kick win.
