Wildfires, heat alerts continue as temperatures drop slightly for few days

Wildfires continue in Portugal but intense heat recedes for next few days before returning over weekend

More than a hundred districts in the interior of northern and central Portugal and two in the Algarve are on Wednesday at maximum risk of fire, according to Portugal’s national meteorological institute (IPMA), as fires continue to harass municipalities in the north.

As of this morning, the ‘most worrying’ blaze appears to be a reactivation of the fire in Celorico de Basto. Others in the area are more under control.

According to the IPMA, all districts in the regions of Bragança and Guarda and most of the municipalities in Vila Real, Castelo Branco and Viseu remain at maximum risk of fire.

Dozens of areas in the regions of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Aveiro, Leiria, Santarém, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Beja and Faro are also at maximum risk.

Mainland Portugal has been on alert since Sunday and will remain so until midnight tomorrow due to the high risk of fire. It may well be that authorities extend the alert, as high temperatures are returning over the weekend, and the overall picture does not really calm down in any more manageable way until August 13.
