38 people ‘lose lives on Portugal’s roads’ over Christmas/ New Year police campaigns

Dismal tally almost double number of deaths recorded in 2024

Thirty-eight people died in road accidents between December 18, 2025, and January 4, 2026, according to the final tally of the Christmas and New Year operations carried out by GNR and PSP police.

According to information sent separately to Lusa by both security forces, a total of 6,083 accidents in 18 days were recorded – resulting in 38 deaths, 127 serious injuries and 1,643 minor injuries.

Twenty-eight of the deaths were caused by accidents on roads patrolled by the GNR (National Republican Guard), including motorways, and 10 by accidents in urban centres, monitored by the PSP (Public Security Police).

The numbers are higher than those of the previous Christmas and New Year operation, writes Lusa “when the GNR recorded 20 deaths between December 18, 2024 and January 2, 2025, and the PSP counted five in the same period”. The reality is that the tally is almost DOUBLE that of last year’s campaigns.

Globally, there were also 12 more serious injuries in this latest ‘festive reason’, but 48 fewer minor injuries than in the 2024/ 2025 campaigns.

In total, between December 18, 2025 and January 4 this year, the two police forces inspected 233,937 drivers, including by radar, and detected 25,928 traffic violations, mostly for speeding (3,828), lack of MOT (3,625) and insurance (1,121), and driving under the influence of alcohol (876). Another 1,103 people were arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level of 1.2 g/l or higher (criminal offences, in other words), and 506 for not having a valid driver’s licence.
