Albufeira brings back free guided tours of old town

Weekly walks in Portuguese and English showcase history, culture and stunning sea views

Albufeira is resuming its series of free guided tours of its old town, starting on Thursday, October 9.

The program, running until June 11 next year, aims to highlight the town’s most iconic sites while boosting activity in the historic centre during the tourism off-season.

The tours will take place every Thursday (except on public holidays) and will be available in both Portuguese and English.

Meeting point is at 10am at Beato Vicente, Largo Jacinto d’Ayet, next to Igreja Santana. From there, participants will follow a route through some of the town’s most remarkable landmarks: Igreja Matriz from the late 18th century, the Carlos Silva e Sousa Arts and Crafts Centre, Igreja de São Sebastião (now the Sacred Art Museum), the 15th-century Misericórdia Chapel, Largo da República with the Archaeology Museum, and finally Rua da Bateria.

The initiative, led by the municipal council’s tourism division, invites visitors to wander the “narrow streets reminiscent of Albufeira’s Moorish past”, discover the history, culture and traditions of its people, and enjoy “breathtaking views” over the bay.

Each walk lasts about two hours and participation is free, but prior registration is required up to two days in advance by emailing turismo@cm-albufeira.pt or calling+351 289 599 502.
