Far-right party CHEGA has won its first municipal council in the Algarve. In Albufeira, CHEGA candidate Rui Cristina pulled off the historic result by securing 40.51% of votes (7,396), enough to oust ruling mayor José Carlos Rolo.
The PSD-CDS coalition, which had ruled the borough for decades, finished second with 32.30% (5,898), ahead of the left-wing coalition of PS-BE-L-PAN, which received 18.56% (3,389).
CHEGA did not secure a majority and will rule with three councillors, the same number as PSD-CDS-PP, while PS will have just one.
