The eastern Algarve town of Alcoutim is preparing for its biggest celebration of the year as the 72nd Festa de Alcoutim returns from September 12 to 14.
Known as the municipality’s main summer event, it attracts thousands of visitors every year from across the Algarve and neighbouring Spain. This year’s edition promises three lively days filled with music, local traditions, and riverside fun, with headline performances from Zé Amaro, Némanus, Noninho Navarro and Maninho.
The festivities begin on Friday morning with the official Municipality Day celebrations, followed by an international football match at 6pm. The evening will continue along Cais Sul with performances by Do Alentejo and Arte Musica. At 10pm, the band Quarta Série opens the main stage, leading up to Zé Amaro’s midnight concert. As the clock strikes two in the morning, a fireworks display will light up the Guadiana River, and DJs Jonny V, Gustavovera and Hood 58 will keep the party going until sunrise.
Saturday’s programme starts with lively street performances at 5pm, followed by a sunset session at the Cais Sul and more music from Rafael Sousa and Arte Musica. Némanus take to the main stage at midnight, with a multimedia “pyromusical” show at 2am and a late-night set from DJs Pete Tha Zouk and Xinha.
On Sunday, the festival shifts to the river with popular sporting events such as swimming races, the traditional duck chase and the greasy pole challenge. The closing evening will feature Noninho Navarro and Maninho performing from 10pm., before DJs Christian F and Xinha take over the final night.
Early risers or late-night revellers can enjoy the traditional cocoa served by the river, a cherished local ritual that rounds off the night.
Throughout the three days, visitors can also enjoy local food, crafts and regional products from various stalls, as well as traditional dances and activities during the day. Admission is free.
