A GNR officer police was injured on Saturday night after being struck by a car whose driver ignored a stop order near a site where authorities suspected illegal street racing was taking place in Tunes, Silves.
It was around 11.40pm when GNR patrols arrived at the Tunes Industrial Zone, near a fuel station, where several vehicles were gathered, reports Correio da Manhã tabloid. As officers approached, they signalled one suspicious car to stop. Instead of complying, the driver sped away and hit one of the officers, causing injuries that required hospital care, CM adds.
The driver fled the scene but was intercepted shortly after with the help of additional GNR patrols in Albufeira.
The tabloid newspaper also reports the driver, 31, had no valid driver’s license and was drunk driving, with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.
