Registrations are now open for the eighth edition of the ALUT – Algarviana Ultra Trail, one of Portugal’s toughest endurance races, set to take place from November 26 to November 29.
This year brings a major change: the race will be open exclusively to solo athletes, with no relay teams allowed.

The event will once again cross the Algarve from east to west, covering a demanding 305 kilometres in a maximum of 72 hours. The race begins in Alcoutim, near the Guadiana River, and finishes in Sagres, on the Atlantic coast. Along the way, runners pass through many other municipalities – Castro Marim, Tavira, São Brás de Alportel, Loulé, Silves, Monchique, and Lagos – showcasing the region’s inland landscapes.
The route largely follows the Via Algarviana and includes the three highest points in the Algarve, making it a true test of endurance and preparation.

Organisers expect more than 40% of participants to come from outside Portugal, which they believe underlines the event’s growing international appeal.
“The ALUT doesn’t need explaining, it needs to be felt!” said event manager Bruno Rodrigues.
The race is held during the quieter tourism season and is seen as a way to boost the Algarve’s interior, helping to reduce seasonal dependence on summer visitors. In 2024, the event involved around 600 people and generated more than €55,000 in direct local economic impact.
Support for runners will include 10 “life bases” along the route, offering food, showers and rest areas, as well as real-time tracking. Organisers also point to a strong environmental focus, with a commitment to eliminating single-use plastics and reducing emissions.
Registration is open via the event’s official website.
