Manuel Marreiros, leader of the independent movement ‘Movimento Renascer’, has been elected mayor of Aljezur following a major victory over PS Socialists, who had ruled the borough for the last 16 years.
Marreiros – who has a long political history in Aljezur after serving five terms as mayor (three for CDU, between 1989 and 2001, and two for PS, between 2001 and 2009) – received 56.86% of votes (1,657), significantly more than PS (33.36%, 972 votes).
The independent movement’s result secured three municipal seats, one more than PS.
