Land, sea and air searches fail to find tourist swept out to sea in Aljezur

Romanian, 20, taken by current yesterday morning

Late last night there was still no sign of the 20-year-old Romanian tourist swept out to sea while he swam with a friend at Arrifana beach, in Aljezur.

The incident was called in shortly before 11.30am – resulting in land, sea and air searches, involving the national maritime authority, the air force and local firefighters using a drone.

Maritime police psychologists were also called in.

Searches were suspended due to nightfall and will resume early this morning.

The advice always at this time of year is to take great care in the sea – particularly on the west coast – as currents can be treacherous, and beaches are months away from being supervised by lifeguards.
