Bowls Algarve . winter league

As players travelled the length of the Algarve in an attempt to settle the next round of their singles, pairs, triples and fours events, ground staff struggled to keep the greens in good condition to enable the League programme to be maintained. Last week I promised you results for weeks 6 and 8 and here they are.

Week 6 was a bumper week for the Rangers who not only welcomed Tigers but then proceeded to beat them 64 shots to 39 and collect 8 points to Nil. On adjacent rinks, Foresters entertained the Terriers winning 65 shots to 36 and collecting 6 points to 2. Meanwhile, Cats hosted the Amigos, running up the competition’s highest score so far of 111 shots to 14 and taking 8 points to Nil. Finally, a derby game in which the Scorpions had a ding-dong battle with the Gladiators, and triumphed by 58 shots to 43 and 5 points to 3.

As we moved into December so we came to Week 8 and another crucial week for the Amigos; this time at the hands of the Greens who beat them 62 shots to 39 and took all 8 points.  The other 3 games were won by 6 points to 2.  The Cats beat the Foresters 64 shots to 39, the Scorpions beat the Rangers 67 shots to 37 and the Tigers beat the Terriers 48 to 37.

So where are we with the League? Well, the Cats are in pole position with 49 points, Foresters and Terriers are equal second with 32, Greens and Amigos are equal fourth with 29, Tigers are sixth with 27, Scorpions seventh with 23, Rangers are up to eighth with 18 and the Gladiators have 17.

Just one game to go before the Christmas break and a well earned rest! Alan Reynolds
