Busy weekend, serious concerns

World Animal Day reminds us not only to celebrate animals, but also to take responsibility for their welfare.

The first weekend of October was a full one for Cadela Carlota, with several activities marking World Animal Day. Our team joined the Tibi Animal Walk on October 4, helping raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and the continuing need for vaccination and identification. On the same weekend, we took part in the Banco Solidário Animal campaign at Pingo Doce Lagos, organised by Animalife.

Thanks to everyone who contributed, we collected around 400 kg of dog food, 250 kg of cat food, and 75 kg of cat litter. These supplies will help us care for around 80 dogs and 60 cats currently at our shelter. We’re grateful to Animalife for including us once again and to Pingo Doce for their continued support in hosting the collection.

However, while it was a productive weekend, there is growing concern about a parvovirus outbreak affecting the region. Many cases have already been reported, and the situation is serious. Parvovirus is highly contagious and particularly dangerous for puppies and unvaccinated dogs, attacking the intestinal tract and immune system. Without immediate treatment, the virus is often fatal.

We urge all dog owners to check vaccination records and avoid taking unvaccinated dogs to public places. The virus can survive for months on surfaces such as pavements, grass, and shoes, making it easy to spread, even without direct contact between animals. Anyone suspecting infection – common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea (often bloody), loss of appetite, and extreme lethargy – should seek veterinary help immediately.

World Animal Day reminds us not only to celebrate animals, but also to take responsibility for their welfare. The recent outbreak shows how quickly preventable diseases can spread – and how vital vaccination remains in keeping our pets, and the wider community, safe.

And a huge thanks to all the volunteers who made the weekend possible – those who spent the day collecting donations in Lagos, and those who stayed at the shelters caring for the dogs and cats.

Among them is Mr Williams, a calm and affectionate cat of more than 10 years. He has tested negative for FIV and FeLV and has the gentlest nature. Like many of our animals, he waits patiently for the comfort of a home and a person to call his own.
