Fado returns to Tavira bandstand next week

The “Fado no Coreto” concert series starts on July 29 with performances by emerging singers Pedro Viola and Helena Candeias.

Back by popular demand, the Fado no Coreto concerts are once again part of Tavira’s Summer entertainmentprogramme.

From July 29 to August 26, the Jardim do Coreto in Tavira will host concerts at 21h00 during which emerging singers will perform this Portuguese musical genre, recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Pedro Viola and Helena Candeias begin this series of concerts on July 29th. Other performances will follow according to the following schedule:

August 12th: Sara Gonçalves and Melissa Simplício;

August 19th: Teresa Viola and Argentina Freire;

August 26th: Inês Gonçalves and Beatriz Pereira.

It’s worth noting that the word fado derives from Latin and means “destiny,” which underpins the deep meaning behind each fado singer or guitarist’s interpretation of this musical style. It’s often associated with longing, melancholy, love, and everyday life, but also with joy and humour.

“Fado is part of our people’s identity. It’s the soul of Portugal! Come to Tavira this summer and enjoy Fado nights at the Bandstand,” says the Tavira City Council.
