Former Sporting CP coach Jorge Silas takes charge of Farense

Farense are looking to return to Portugal’s top football tier after being relegated last season

Farense have confirmed Jorge Silas as their new head coach, announcing the appointment on social media last week.

“It’s official: Jorge Silas is the new manager of Sporting Clube Farense. He brings experience, ambition and the fighting spirit that defines the Farense identity. We’re ready to write a new chapter… and it starts now! Welcome to the Farense family, Mister Silas,” the club posted.

Silas, who has signed a one-year contract with Farense, will replace Tozé Marreco, who departed after the club’s relegation to Liga Portugal 2 for the 2025/26 season.

In his first words as Farense boss, Silas made it clear he understands the weight of the badge and the expectations that come with it.

“It is with great pride, responsibility and ambition that I take on this challenge. I know what this club represents, the strength of its supporters and the history it carries. We will work with discipline, passion and daily commitment to honour the crest we represent. We count on everyone – players, staff and our supporters – to make this journey a source of pride for the city of Faro and the Algarve region,” Silas said.

A former midfielder during his player career, the 48-year-old coach has previously managed Belenenses SAD, Famalicão and most notably Sporting CP.

Meanwhile, Farense has also announced that club captain, 36-year-old Marco Matias, has renewed his contract for one more year. With over 100 matches under his belt for Farense and 13 goals, Matias is expected to contribute both on and off the pitch with his vast experience.

“Knowing that I will continue wearing this jersey, day after day, is something I cannot explain. As captain, I feel a responsibility to be an example of commitment, dedication and ambition for the whole team. I will always be at the frontline, setting the example on and off the pitch, with total respect for this club and our fans. Together, we will keep fighting for each victory,” the captain said.
