International Poetry Festival comes to Algarve

Organisers are meeting with the famous Algarve Poetry Renaissance, a new generation of Portuguese and international immigrant artists

The International Poetry Festival is taking place on Saturday, August 9 at O Plano Art Center (R. das Escolas 1) in Odeceixe.

The event starts at 4pm with an organic food lunch and a Poetry Workshop of creative writing and public expression.

The performances start at 6pm with young artists from the Algarve hosted by South West Youth Arts. After 8pm, the programme features 21 Poetry Films from 14 countries mixed with 14 Spoken Word / Rap / Freestyle live improvisations of poets, DJs and visual artists from 11 countries, an art meeting based on live poetry, visuals and late-night DJ sets hosted by Com-Glitter.Com.

Say organisers in a press statement, “The Institute for Experimental Arts is travelling to South Portugal and teaming up with South West Youth Arts and Com-Glitter.Com to meet with the vibrant scene of the famous Algarve Poetry Renaissance, a new generation of Portuguese and international immigrant artists.”

The festival includes in total 40 artists from 19 countries.

“The Institute for Experimental Art has established a significant international presence through successful festival curation in major cultural centers including London, New York, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Weimar, as well as diverse locations across Asia and Latin America, specifically Athens, Thessaloniki, Chiang Mai (Thailand), Bali, Calcutta, Varanasi, San Cristóbal, and Mexico City.”

Entrance: suggested donation 5e / 8e / 10e; Free under 18 years old

4pm-6pmPERFORMANCE POETRY WORKSHOP “Living History Through Voice”

Join us for an intimate workshop where personal memory meets historical narrative. Participants will craft original poems exploring historical events they’ve witnessed or lived through, then bring these pieces to life through dynamic performance. Using props, sound effects, and vocal techniques, poets will transform their written words into immersive storytelling experiences that bridge individual experience with collective memory, creating powerful connections between past and present.

Sissy Doutsiou is an internationally acclaimed spoken word artist and actress based in Athens. She is the curator of the International Video Poetry Festival. She has toured across America, Asia, and Europe with performances, lectures, and theater workshops.
