A massive crane collapsed in the early hours of this morning in Figueira da Foz, on the coast of Coimbra, hitting six homes on three different streets in the touristic area of Bairro Novo.
Mercifully no injuries were reported.
The crane collapsed shortly after 3am, between the streets Bernardo Lopes and Académico Zagalo.
A number of people have had to be temporarily rehoused as authorities now have to assess structural damage, which a source for the local fire station has admitted will be “considerable”.
Images of this disaster are now all over social networks. The crane is described as weighing 60-tons. It was “attached to a private renovation project on a building on Rua da Liberdade – which was formerly the headquarters of the local PSD party. The construction equipment was positioned behind the building (on Rua Académico Zagalo, which is closed to traffic due to the works) and fell onto a house on that street and five others on Rua Bernardo Lopes and Rua Raimundo Esteves”, writes Lusa.
Work got underway mid-morning to remove the damaged crane using heavy equipment.
For now there has been no specific reason given for this disaster, but it could well be due to the continued bad weather/ high winds.
