After months of rain – and storms with names – we are about to get ‘Oriana’: the 15th in a long miserable line – but the difference is that she will herald a return to sunshine and dry weather.
Oriana “will cause the next, and probably last, episode of heavy rain and wind that will hit the continent”, said weather reports last night.
Rain will be heavy from this afternoon, through the evening and into Friday morning.
Oriana’s arrival particularly threatens areas in the north and centre where flooding and flood risks are high – but there is this one enormous consolation: Oriana will act as a kind of ‘switch’ that will turn off the rain, change the atmospheric pattern and bring back the sun.
The weather will also turn very cold, warn meteorologists.
But before that, the country has to get through this one last storm which will bring high winds and weather warnings.
