The inland village of Paderne in the Algarve municipality of Albufeira is preparing to go back in time for its beloved medieval fair, Paderne Medieval.
Running from Thursday to Sunday (January 1-4), the event invites visitors to travel to the Middle Ages to learn about the customs and traditions of the time.

Streets will come alive with merchants selling handmade goods, typical Algarve treats and live performances reminiscent of the medieval era.
Festivities begin on New Year’s Day with the opening of the medieval market and a parade of troubadours announcing the arrival of King Dinis. The highlight of the first day is the Royal Procession through the village, followed by the symbolic delivery of the Charter granting Paderne Castle to the Order of Avis, scheduled for 3pm.
Throughout the four-day event, residents and tourists alike will be able to watch and take part in a wide-ranging programme that recreates medieval customs, including dances and revelry, staged historical scenes, mounted tournaments, fire theatre and fencing duels.
Between the bustle of the market stalls and the aromas drifting from traditional taverns, entertainment continues throughout the day, with costumed characters, musicians, dancers, jugglers and storytellers bringing the village to life.
The event runs from 12pm to 11pm, except on the final day, when it closes at 9pm, and admission is free.
