The Onyria Palmares golf course near Lagos was the venue for last weekend’s PGA European Team Championship for club professionals.
Two-time individual winner and newly crowned national champion Hugo Santos led the home challenge, also featuring fellow Algarvian Antonio Sobrinho and Nelson Cavalheiro, which saw Portugal handily placed in fifth behind runaway leaders Scotland after the first day’s play.
By Sunday afternoon, the Scots had extended their stunning ten-under-par lead to an unassailable 16 below, easily securing their top share of the €35,000 prize money, while Portugal were able to look back on their best placing ever in the completion, tied in sixth with Spain.
Meanwhile, Onyria Group, owner of the Palmares Beach & Golf Resort in the Algarve, has been awarded the Golf Tourism Supplier of the Year prize by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). In October, Palmares Golf was also recognised among the best 1,000 golf courses in the world. The group also owns the Hotel Quinta da Marinha Resort and Marinha Edition Hotel & Thalasso, both in Cascais.
