In The Pink Gallery, Loulé, is hosting a solo exhibition of internationally acclaimed photographer Bastiaan Woudt, starting in September.
Born in the Netherlands in 1987, Bastiaan Woudt is a self-taught artist who has swiftly established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary photography. His refined, minimalist aesthetic, spanning intimate portraits, evocative landscapes, and conceptual mixed media demonstrates a unique mastery of both form and emotion.
For this special exhibition, In The Pink Gallery will present works from several of Woudt’s major series, offering collectors and audiences an in-depth look at his evolving practice:
• Rhythm – perhaps Woudt’s most celebrated and critically acclaimed body of work, this series of portraits exemplifies his mastery in capturing form, texture, and human presence in its purest expression, highlighting how fashion can create and obscure ones identity and persona.
• Champions – a powerful photographic series created in Zambia in collaboration with Orange Babies for their 25th anniversary. This series portrays the strength and resilience of young heroes living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, captured through Woudt’s signature black-and-white lens.
• Peak – a breathtaking collection of landscapes, capturing the raw, sculptural beauty of nature through Woudt’s minimalist yet dramatic approach.
• Karawan – an evocative series drawing from his travels and encounters, where Woudt blends portraiture and landscape to create timeless, almost meditative compositions.
• Echo from Beyond – an ongoing, experimental project that serves as Woudt’s creative sketchbook. In this mixed media series, he pushes the boundaries of photography by merging his extensive photographic archive with the generative possibilities of AI. Inspired by his psychedelic journeys, personal reflections, and the media he consumes, Echo from Beyond offers a unique visual language that bridges his photographic past with the emerging realities of art and technology.
In the words of Bastiaan Woudt: “As an artist, I stand at the crossroads of time, looking towards a future where AI becomes an integral part of art. ‘Echo from Beyond’ is about exploring new technological frontiers, merging the future potential of AI with the timeless art of photography. This project is a conversation between my photographic past and future and the new realities that AI can create. It’s a fusion that respects the beauty of traditional photography while embracing the vast potential of the future.”
Throughout his career, Woudt’s work has been exhibited at major fairs including Paris Photo, AIPAD New York, and Photo London; and in 2022, he presented his first solo museum exhibition Twist at Museum Kranenburgh in Bergen.
His editorial and commercial collaborations include Harper’s Bazaar, British Vogue, Numéro NL, L’Officiel, New York Magazine, and Chanel, while his representation by leading galleries such as Bildhalle (Zurich and Amsterdam), Atlas Gallery (London), Jackson Fine Art (Atlanta), and Fahey/ Klein Gallery (Los Angeles) further underscores his global recognition. This will be Bastiaan Woudt’s second time exhibiting with In The Pink in Portugal.
Woudt is also the founder of 1605 Collective, a publishing house and creative platform that amplifies both his own work and that of other artists, alongside the recently launched 1605 Magazine, which offers an annual exploration of influential voices in art, design, and culture.
Opening on September 5, 2025, the exhibition will be on display until mid-November.
