“Portugal’s largest nativity scene” headlines VRSA Christmas

Vila Real de Santo António is getting ready to kick off its Christmas festivities. From November 29 to January 6, the town’s historic centre transforms into a full-fledged Christmas Village, while the local cultural centre unveils Portugal’s “largest nativity scene” on November 30.

The big opening takes place on Monday, December 1, when Santa Claus is set to arrive at Praça Marquês de Pombal at 5pm, just in time for the first lighting of the festive decorations across the entire municipality. Earlier that afternoon, at 3pm, Santa will keep tradition alive with his annual cross-border visit to Ayamonte, celebrating the close ties between the neighbouring towns.

Every day from 10am to 7.30pm, Vila Real de Santo António’s Christmas Village comes alive with Christmas music, dancing, children’s entertainment, outdoor shows, cooking demos, sports activities and many other festivities, in the hope of bringing extra energy to the open-air shopping district and boosting local businesses during the festive season. Meanwhile, the traditional Christmas Market returns with regional delicacies, crafts and plenty of gift ideas.

For younger visitors, there will be much to discover at Santa’s Village and Santa’s House, created to spark imagination and deliver unforgettable encounters with Santa himself. Festive workshops for children, including Christmas and Three Kings crafts, run throughout the season.

One of the highlights of the town’s festive program promises to be its famous Giant Nativity Scene, which will be open to visits from November 30 to January 6 at the António Aleixo cultural centre. With nearly 6,000 figures, it’s described as “the largest in Portugal” and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Sports lovers can also join the São Silvestre Run on December 6, starting at 4.45pm. Portuguese athletes Ana Cabecinha and Ana Dias return as ambassadors for an event that has already surpassed the number of participants from its first edition.

Festivities wrap up on January 4, when the Three Kings from Ayamonte parade through the streets of Vila Real de Santo António before arriving at Praça Marquês de Pombal at 11.30am.

All festive events are free.
