Asks court particularly for ‘preventative review’ on changes to family reunification
In a move that will satisfy critics calling for the opinion of constitutionalists, President Marcelo has today sent amendments to Portugal’s laws on foreigners’ entry, stay, exit and removal from national territory to the Constitutional Court.
The amendments were approved in parliament last week, with votes in favour by AD (PSD, CDS-PP) and CHEGA, and votes against by almost all other parties (Iniciativa Liberal abstained).
Concerns lie in the radical nature of the government’s proposals.
A note published on the official website of the Presidency this afternoon said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has “submitted the decree of the Assembly of the Republic amending the Aliens Act to urgent preventive constitutional review by the Constitutional Court”.
Among other clauses, the president is querying the changes to family reunification.
