Searches ongoing in flood-hit Montemor-o-Velho for missing couple

Couple, in their 60s, left home for doctor’s appointment four days ago

Searches are ongoing today for a couple in their late-60s who left home in the flood-hit municipality of Montemor-o-Velho four days ago, and have not been seen or heard of since.

Family members raised the alarm yesterday, and straight away four GNR agents and five firefighters began searching in two separate vehicles.

The searches ended at 10pm last night, and have since been resumed.

It is believed that the couple travelled to Coimbra for a doctor’s appointment. There is even the suggestion that they stayed long enough to share a meal with a friend – and then the understanding is that they set off back to their home, in the village of Varride.

According to the commander of Soure fire station, João Paulo Contente, authorities are concentrating on the western area of the municipality, in an area that includes ricefields flooded after last week’s ‘dyke burst’.

Information coming through has described the couple as a woman, aged 65, with issues of mobility, and her husband, 68, with what could be early signs of dementia.
