Sweet treats, long shifts, and life-saving care

Funds raised go towards vaccinations, treatments, and emergency care for animals

A huge thank you to Glenna, who not only baked tray after tray of cookies but also coordinated our incredible team of volunteers during the Arte Doce fair in Lagos, working shifts that stretched past midnight every night. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the support we received was heartwarming.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, bought something, donated, or simply cheered us on, we raised an amazing €1,543.87. That money isn’t just a number – it directly funds vaccinations, treatments, and emergency care for the animals who need us most.

And this week, that need was heartbreakingly clear.

Luna’s story

Just days ago, we were called to help a tiny kitten who had reportedly been thrown from a moving car in Lagos. She was barely two months old, weak and thin. At the vet, she tested positive for panleukopenia — a highly contagious and often fatal virus that attacks kittens with terrifying speed.

Thanks to the quick response from the vet team and the funds that made her treatment possible, Luna is now showing signs of recovery. She’s in isolation with our foster volunteer Cátia to ensure the virus isn’t passed on to other cats. It’s early days, but we’re hopeful. Without vaccination, her chances would have been very different.

More abandoned lives

This week also saw the rescue of eight more kittens – two litters, one of five and one of three, all found abandoned. These little ones are not yet vaccinated and cannot be brought into the main shelter until we’re sure they’re healthy and virus-free.

We are in urgent need of foster homes – safe, clean spaces where these kittens can be cared for, isolated, and monitored before rehoming.

Why it all matters

Portugal has the highest rate of feline leukemia virus (FeLV) in Europe – a chronic, untreatable disease that affects the immune system. Panleukopenia, on the other hand, is an acute and often fatal virus, particularly in kittens. Both are serious, both are preventable, and both highlight why vaccination and early intervention are absolutely vital.

Your support at Arte Doce means kittens like Luna get a second chance. But we can’t do it without foster families. If you can help – even short-term – please get in touch. A safe space could save a life.
