The November 2025 Night Sky

Welcome to the November night sky. Now we are heading into the winter night sky in the northern hemisphere, with the constellation of Orion the Hunter rising in the eastern sky at nightfall. Setting in the west is the three bright stars of the summer triangle.

November’s night sky has four visible meteor showers. The first is the northern Taurid shower on the 12th. Then we have the Leonids on the 17th, followed by the Alpha Monocerotids on the 21st, and finally the Orionids on the 28th.

The most interesting of the four is the Leonids on the night of the 17th. This shower can be very strong, and every 33 years can be spectacular. The year of 1966 and 1999 were excellent with thousands of shooting stars.

The full Moon of the 5th will be a super-moon, bigger and brighter than normal. The Moon is close to Saturn and Neptune on the 2nd and again on the 29th. The Moon is also close to Jupiter on the 10th and close to mars on the 21st.

You can just catch the red planet Mars over in the west 30 minutes after sunset. The bright planet Venus can be seen over in the east one hour before sunrise. The gas giant planet Jupiter will rise at 9pm in the constellation of Gemini. The ringed planet Saturn sets at 2am in the constellation of Aquarius.

We have two comets in November – the first is R2 Swan, but it will be very difficult visually; the second is A6 Lemmon, and in the first week of November it can be seen in binoculars crossing the celestial equator, heading south in the constellation of Ophiuchus about 25 degrees to the left of Arcturus, the brightest star in Bootes.

The Moon is full on the 1st, last quarter on the 12th, new on the 20th and first quarter on November 28.
