Three people were injured – one critically – in the early hours of this morning after shots were fired from a car passing through Rua do Benformoso – a street now notorious for its mixture of immigrant communities.
CNN Portugal broke the news shortly after midnight last night.
The injured are three men, aged between 29 and 43. One suffered injuries to his chest and was transported to São José hospital in a critical condition. He has reportedly undergone emergency surgery.
According to a source for PSP public security police, the victims “were hit by shots fired from a gun from inside a motor vehicle the licence plate of which is unknown at this time”.
Injuries suffered to the other two men are not life threatening. One was hit in one of his feet, the other sustained a head injury. Both were transported to the same hospital as the worst injured man.
PJ police called to the scene have already managed to recover what is believed to be the gun that fired the shots, along with a number of bullet casings.
Police reinforcement in Rua do Benformoso – which hit the headlines 14 months ago due to a PSP raid – has been reinforced for the time being.
