Top golfers and bowlers gear up for major competitions

It is just over a week away from the Algarve’s biggest sporting events in the fields of golf and bowls.

The PGA tournament, The Portugal Masters, will bring some of the game’s top players, including Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke, to compete at the Oceânico Victoria course in Vilamoura from October 15 to 18 (see article above by Skip Bandele).

Top crown lawn green bowls players will compete for the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal to be played between October 12 and 16 at the Amendoeira Golf Resort Bowls Club.

The crown green event will display the skills of well known players, including Graeme Wilson who came top of the 2009 rankings, as well as Gary Ellis, Glynn Cookson, Callum Wraight, Andy Cairns and top woman player Meliza Herbert.

Both hosted by the Oceânico Group, the events will be filmed during the week and will be televised on Sky Sports at the beginning of November.

Oceânico Group is hoping to bring sports personalities and top players in other fields of sport to the Algarve with the opening of a Sports Club at the Amendoeira resort on Tuesday, October 13 from 4.15pm.

The Amendoeira Sports Club boasts six tennis courts, 2 five-a-side football pitches, a full-sized football pitch suitable for Gaelic football, rugby and cricket, beach volley ball, beach football, a gymnasium and the floodlit nine hole par 3 Oceânico Academy course.

The Oceânico stand at last weekend’s BLiP exhibition in Portimão generated over 200 people showing interest in the sports club facilities.
