Union cancels airport strikes planned through August

SIMA has reached agreement with handling company Menzies (formerly Groundforce)

A deal brokered at the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security has headed off further airport strikes by handlers whose actions have already blighted two long weekends.

SIMA, the Portuguese Metalworking and Related Industries Union withdrew its strike notice yesterday after reaching an agreement with management Menzies (formerly Groundforce).

In a letter sent to the company, SIMA guaranteed that following the agreement, its members “will not go on strike”.

“The strike notice in question is hereby cancelled, given the agreement reached between the SIMA Trade Union Committee and the company’s representatives at the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security with the representatives of the Ministry,” reads the document.

The cancellation comes after strikes held from July 25-28 and from August 8-11 caused endless logistical headaches and cancellations.

Strikes called off are those scheduled for August 15-18, August 22-25 and August 29 to September 1.
