Vila Real de Santo António is gearing up once again for one of its sweetest festive traditions: the unveiling and serving of its giant Bolo-Rei, set to take place this Sunday (December 14), from 10.30am.
This year’s Christmas showstopper will stretch an impressive 70 metres and weigh 275 kilos, crafted by the team from local pastry shop A Padaria under the guidance of Chef Filipe Martins.

The event is organised by the municipal council and sees eight pastry chefs working for three full days preparing every detail to ensure the cake lives up to the hype.
Alongside the cake, visitors will be able to enjoy a performance by the choir and guitar ensemble from the Regional Conservatory of Vila Real de Santo António, while Santa Claus from the town’s Christmas Village will also be on hand to delight children and adults alike.
Cadets and young volunteers from the Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim Fire Brigades will help distribute the cake and collect donations.
The council describes the event as a “moment of togetherness and community involvement” which strengthens the bond between local institutions and the population.
