30 police officers involved in searches related to Madeleine McCann

Work began early this morning (June 3) and is expected to continue until Friday

The Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ) currently has 30 inspectors involved in the investigations requested by the German police in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Praia da Luz (Lagos) 18 years ago, said a PJ source.

Work began early this Tuesday morning and is expected to continue until Friday.

The search is taking place in a vast area between the city of Lagos and Praia da Luz, where the main suspect, Christian Brückner, lived at the time of the disappearance.

PJ also said that everything collected will remain in the possession of the German police, who are leading the investigation, for analysis.

In a statement released today, the PJ (the country’s main criminal investigation agency) said that the searches are taking place following a European Investigation Decision “issued by the German authorities and signed by the leader of the public prosecutor’s office in the district of Faro”.

The Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office is conducting the ongoing investigation and has requested the execution of search warrants in the borough of Lagos as part of “a preliminary investigation against a German citizen suspected of the murder of British citizen Madeleine Beth McCann,” the statement added.

Madeleine McCann, then aged three, disappeared on May 3, 2007 from the apartment where she was sleeping with her two-year-old twin brothers in Praia da Luz, while her parents were dining with friends a few metres away in the seaside resort.

In 2020, German police declared Christian Brückner the main suspect in the child’s abduction and murder, but no charges were filed.
