A fresh Alentejo red perfect for spring

I continue to explore the lighter side of the Alentejo, and today I have another to try: Intus Tinto 2023. Inspired by traditional Roman winemaking, Natus Vini produces wines that reflect the place in which they are made — Vidigueira.

This subregion of the Alentejo is known for low nighttime temperatures and protection from the nearby Serra do Mendro, helping to prolong cool mornings. This natural cooling effect results in fewer hot, sunny hours during the day, allowing the grapes to maintain acidity and express a fresh profile.

Natus Vini wines are made with minimal intervention, no pesticides, and dry farming (relying solely on rainfall to water the vines). Natus Vini also produces wines made in traditional clay amphorae, but the Intus Tinto is a light, bright, juicy, and delicately tannic red wine. Pure aromas of red cherries and plums match a vibrant ruby color in the glass.

Grapes from old-vine Trincadeira and Aragonez vineyards were harvested by hand, with foot treading in the adega to start spontaneous fermentation. After pressing, the juice continued fermentation and ageing in small stainless-steel tanks before bottling. Serve chilled between 12 and 16°C. It is ready to enjoy now.

Find Intus Tinto at Apolónia for €15.95.
