Age, love, and letting go: the stories behind our dogs

Amarelinho and Bobi are just two examples of the many wonderful companions waiting for homes

At our shelter, stories like those of Amarelinho and Bobi are sadly familiar – but they also remind us of just how much love these animals still have to give.

Amarelinho, just four years old, came to us under difficult circumstances. His owner, in declining health, struggled to keep up with such a strong, energetic dog. Afraid he couldn’t keep Amarelinho safe, he asked the vet to put him to sleep. It was a desperate decision born of worry, not a lack of love. Thankfully, Amarelinho was given another chance – and today he is affectionate, lively, and full of joy, the kind of companion who would thrive in an active home.

Bobi’s story is similar. This gentle seven-year-old lived happily with his elderly owner, now in their late 90s. As age caught up, the daily routine of walking and feeding became too much. Surrendering him was not a sign of lost love, but a reality of lost strength. Bobi remains every bit the lovable, loyal dog – steady, affectionate, and ready to brighten someone’s life with his companionship.

Sadly, these cases reflect a wider reality: many elderly owners are forced to give up pets when their own health or circumstances change. The animals are not unwanted – they are simply loved by someone who can no longer provide the care they need. That’s where we step in.

At Cadela Carlota in Lagos, our mission is constant. At any one time, over 80 dogs of all shapes, sizes, and stories are waiting in our care. Some are young and full of energy, others are older and calmer, but all are affectionate, loveable, and simply looking for a second chance.

Amarelinho and Bobi are just two examples of the many wonderful companions waiting for homes. One is playful and adventurous, perfect for an active family. The other is calm and dependable, ideal for someone seeking gentle company. Both, like so many shelter dogs, prove that a second chance doesn’t just change their lives – it changes yours too.

If you or someone you know is ready to open your heart and home, you won’t just be rescuing a dog. You’ll be gaining a loyal friend, a source of joy, and a reminder that love always finds its way.
