Algarve goes green for St. Patrick’s Day

Parades, gala dinner and charity concert headline packed programme across the region

The Algarve’s Irish community is gearing up for a lively St. Patrick’s season, with several events lined up to mark the occasion.

From family parades to a black-tie dinner and a charity concert, this year’s programme highlights what organisers say is the growing bond between Ireland and the Algarve.

“St. Patrick’s is a moment to celebrate Irish heritage and the special ties between Ireland and Portugal. It is also an opportunity to share Irish culture, traditions and music with the wider community. I warmly invite everyone to join us,” said Andrea Viegas, Honorary Consul of Ireland to the Algarve.

Gala dinner kicks off celebrations

Festivities begin on Friday, March 13, with the traditional St. Patrick’s Society Dinner at the Penina Hotel in Alvor.

The evening promises dinner and dancing, bringing together members of the Irish community and friends from across the region.

Tickets are priced at €43 for members and €48 for non-members. Bookings can be made by contacting Mary on +351 962 585 622 or via email at st.patricks.society.algarve@gmail.com.

Family parade and Irish dancing

On Sunday, March 15, attention turns to Quinta do Lago for the St. Patrick’s Kids & Family Parade at Quinta Shopping.

Families are asked to gather at 9.30am, with the event running from 10am until 1pm.

The morning will feature traditional Irish music, children’s performances, an Irish dancing workshop and storytelling, alongside school stalls and Irish food. After strong interest last year, Irish dancing will once again take centre stage. The visiting dance school has indicated it is keen to return later in the year to host more workshops, reflecting growing enthusiasm among Algarve families.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) will also attend as part of efforts to explore developing Gaelic games in the region and to connect with potential local volunteers.

Charity concert finale

The celebrations come to a close on Tuesday, March 17 with a St. Patrick’s Charity Concert at the Wyndham Grand Algarve.

Guests are invited to a drinks reception at 6pm, with the concert starting at 6.30pm.

The evening will feature a specially curated Irish-themed programme performed by the Algarve Orchestra, promising what organisers describe as an uplifting tribute to Irish music and culture.

Tickets are priced at €25, with proceeds supporting the Aleixo Foundation and the Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Association in Quarteira. For tickets and information, contact +351 289 157 353 or email marlene.netomendonca@honoraryconsul.ie.

Golf, pubs and a taste of home

Beyond the headline events, several golf tournaments will take place across the Algarve during March to mark the occasion. Irish pubs throughout the region are also expected to “go green”, hosting traditional music ‘seisiúns’ and Irish dancing performances.

Meanwhile, local supermarkets will be increasing their stock of Irish products, giving residents the chance to bring a taste of Ireland into their own homes.

“I am truly proud to help coordinate a varied and meaningful programme and to see St. Patrick’s firmly established in the Algarve calendar as a celebration of community, culture, family and connection,” Andrea Viegas added.
