Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) launched the first meeting at its new ‘home’ in grand style on October 3.
Joachim Hartl, manager of the newly-opened Conrad Hotel in Quinta do Lago, greeted more than 80 Rotarians and guests to the dinner meeting and expressed his wish for the Conrad to become a venue for social activities in the Algarve.
After the usual Rotary procedures, members and guests were treated to a three course meal prepared by the hotel’s chefs.
Dentist José Miceli became the first new Rotary member to be inaugurated at the hotel.
The guest speaker Dr. Pedro Nunes, Head of Faro Hospital’s Administration Board, spoke of his determination to improve the hospital, especially the emergency department, where in the past the facilities had not always been sufficient to cater for the number of patients needing treatment.
He mentioned that the building of a new hospital for the Algarve had been put on hold due to the current financial crisis but that he intended to use the limited finance available to improve the existing facilities at the hospital and provide a state-of-the-art service to the community. He is also in the process of hiring more than 100 new doctors.
A raffle was held raising €225 for local needy people.
