Another scorcher on way: temperatures exceeding 40ºC over weekend

Heat returns from Thursday

Another scorcher is on its way for mainland Portugal. Starting from Thursday, temperatures are set to rise exceeding 40ºC in certain regions (particularly inland).

IPMA sea and atmosphere institute says in a statement: “There is a tendency for the anticyclone, located in the Azores region, to intensify and extend its ridge towards Central Europe from July 24, causing an easterly flow and, consequently, a transport of hot, dry air over the Iberian Peninsula and the Madeira archipelago.”

Thus, after days of welcome respite from intense heat – “with temperatures close to or slightly below normal for this time of year on the mainland” (according to IPMA), we are all well-warned: it is going to get very hot.

For how long though is the question: IPMA says there is still “some uncertainty about the intensity and duration of (this) episode, advising people to monitor forecasts over the next few days”.
