Jenny Clarke, President of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), and her colleague Anita Wight have just left Animal Rescue Algarve’s Shelter ‘Cabanita’. Sid Richardson, ARA’s CIC, and his team have been discussing details for their mutual project ‘Legacy’.
A video explaining the ‘Legacy Pet Plan’ together with leaflets are the basic tools for Anita, their recently appointed Ambassador for ‘Legacy’ to take on the road with her, together with a well-rehearsed message for the many animal lovers on the Algarve. “The UK have such plans, we know they work, but it’s a new concept here.”
“Firstly, our aim is to let all animal lovers know that if anything happens to them, their pet(s) will be well-looked after. There is a mental block when it comes to our future and what will be?” Anita nods thoughtfully. Sadly, her husband died some four years ago, suddenly without warning. “This made me realise that we are on this planet by the will of whatever, whoever. If, for any reason I should become ill or die; unable to look after my seven. What will happen to them?”

Belonging to APAA has opened her eyes to the unfortunate animals that get abandoned for no reason other than a lack of forethought. “All we are trying to do is in a practical sense, making the personal load of families more tolerable when pets are involved. They have to go somewhere.” There are ‘Canils’ well supported, but unfortunately overcrowded and understaffed. “When you visit ARA’s wonderful purpose-built shelter ‘Cabanita’, you see open spaces in natural countryside.” Anita’s smile brightens. “But it is the absolutely dedicated team looking after the animals, a mix of paid and unpaid staff. All young, well-trained. Their Team Leaders are exceptional. and João Ferreira. the General Manager, runs a tight but loyal ship. Undoubtedly, the animals come first. Their re-homing statistics are phenomenal, matching pet to new family with care.”
A donation ‘gifted’ to ARA will help them to look after all the animals in the shelter, to give them safety, veterinary attention, feeding, re-homing. Needless to say, your pet(s) will get priority treatment and re-homing. “I know that thinking this out, now, is saving my family and friends the pain involved with dealing with pets if I should become ill or die.” Her seven have changed, colour, shape and breed. “Whether you have one, two or several pets, they will all be cared for the ARA way. Think ‘Legacy’ now before it’s too late for your pets.” Unsure? Arrange a meeting with Anita to visit ARA.
