Better together: why some animals are truly inseparable

Sometimes, the most beautiful stories are the ones that come in pairs

In animal welfare, you’ll often hear the term “bonded pair” or “bonded animals”. It’s used to describe two animals who have formed such a strong emotional attachment that separating them would cause real distress and negatively affect their wellbeing.

These bonds can form between siblings, long-term companions, or animals who have relied on each other during difficult early experiences. For them, being together isn’t just a comfort – it’s essential.

Bonded animals often sleep together, groom each other, play together, and show signs of anxiety if separated. In rescue situations, keeping these pairs together can make the difference between an animal merely coping and truly thriving. That’s why rescues sometimes seek joint or paired adoptions, even though it can take a little longer to find the right home.

Cadela Carlota currently has two beautiful, bonded pairs looking for families who understand that love sometimes comes as a set.

Bruno and Alice are two young cats who are inseparable in the truest sense. Bruno (white) and Alice (tabby) came from a farm where they were not socialised, which has made them shy around humans. However, with patience and gentle care from one of our volunteers, they are already making wonderful progress. They take confidence from each other – when one is brave, the other follows. At around eight months old, they are incredibly sweet kittens who simply need a calm, loving home where they can continue to grow together.

Then there are Black and Rocky, two gentle giant dogs who have already waited far too long. These brothers spent the first part of their lives chained up from just three months old, before being rescued two years ago. Despite their past, they are calm, affectionate, and well-mannered dogs who walk beautifully on the lead and adore human company.

Their bond as brothers is unmistakable – they offer each other reassurance, play together, and relax side by side. Separating them would mean taking away their greatest source of security.

Ideally, Black and Rocky would love a home with outdoor space, where they can finally enjoy freedom, safety, and the life they were once denied.

Adopting a bonded pair may seem like a bigger commitment, but it also means double the love, double the companionship, and animals who settle more easily because they have each other. Sometimes, the most beautiful stories are the ones that come in pairs.
