A BRITISH man who was attacked in Vilamoura late last month has died.
David Morley died in the São José hospital in Lisbon on Friday (July 4), a spokesman from the British Embassy in Lisbon confirmed on Monday.
The 64-year old tourist from Ryton near Newcastle had been staying in his timeshare apartment at the Four Seasons in Vilamoura with his wife Marie.
He was found by a passerby near the Four Seasons at around 3am on Friday June 27, who then called the GNR.
When the GNR arrived on the scene David Morley was still conscious but he fell into a coma after being admitted to hospital.
A spokesman for the GNR told The Resident: “There were no initial signs of robbery because the man still had all his jewellery.”
However, his wallet was found later with all money missing.
His wife Marie is now back in the UK and told David Old of the Newcastle Evening Chronicle that David had gone to buy cigars after a meal with friends.
After he failed to return, Marie went looking for him.
A friend who was also searching for David told Marie about a man fitting his description slumped in a walkway and at this point Marie used a taxi to take her to the location near the Four Seasons.
When Marie arrived at the scene the police told her not to look at her husband.
“The police kept telling me to stay calm, that he was going to be all right,” she said.
David was unable to recover from injuries he had sustained, including a confirmed fractured skull.
David Morley was a former professional cricketer and worked for Barclays bank as an account manager before retiring and becoming a member of Seahouses and Arcott Hall golf clubs.
His brother Keith Morley said: “He was my best friend and a great bloke.”
Police confirmed the incident is being investigated.
