December 2025 has now been officially labelled the 7nth wettest December since the year 2000 in mainland Portugal, ending the mild drought that existed in November in Évora, Beja and Faro.
According to institute of sea and atmosphere IPMA’s latest monthly climatological bulletin, December “was rainy,” with total precipitation being “above normal,” corresponding to “about 137% of the average value” in the reference period of 1991-2020.
IPMA also highlights the end of the mild drought that “still existed at the end of November in the districts of Évora, Beja and Faro” – as well as the snowfall that occurred between December 21 and 23 “at altitudes above 400 meters in many locations in the North and Centre”.
Regarding temperature, last December was the 11th warmest since 2000, with the average air temperature reaching 9.93°C (degrees Celsius), 0.19°C higher than the average for the period 1991-2020.
The average maximum temperature was 13.83°C and the average minimum temperature was 6.04°C.
IPMA’s news today comes as practically all the dams and reservoirs of the Algarve are nudging full capacity – some even effecting ‘controlled discharges’.
The next few days however will see the weather changing fairly dramatically, with a cold snap taking the place of rain, particularly over the next few days.
