At Cadela Carlota, we begin by thanking photographer and storyteller Carlos Filipe. His generosity, talent, and commitment to animals have already made an impact – when we published some of his photos on our social media, they generated a wave of interest in the very dogs and cats we care for. That response makes us even more excited to see the full exhibition.
From October 2–12 (11am–7pm), the historic Armazém Regimental, Praça Infante Dom Henrique, Lagos, will host Eyes That Ask, a moving photo exhibition and retail shop in support of our shelter.
The exhibition’s Opening Reception is planned for October 3, at 6pm, with an author’s presentation on October 10, at 6pm – dates not to be missed.
Eyes That Ask is more than a gallery display; it’s a conversation. Each portrait by Carlos looks directly at the reasons dogs and cats end up in shelters. The faces – scarred, hopeful, patient – speak in the first person, challenging us to answer with care. The aim is not blame but clarity, compassion, and the possibility of change.
Carlos’s work has already reached far beyond Portugal. In his books Não Quero Morrer Aqui (I Don’t Want to Die Here) and Diários dos que Ninguém Quer (Diaries of Those Nobody Wants), his lens and words combine to ensure no life is forgotten. His photographs remind us that beauty lies in difference, and that all beings deserve dignity, kindness, and a home.
Alongside Carlos’s portraits, visitors will discover the creations of Karin Geens, an artisan whose handwoven accessories, wearable art, and decorative home décor make beautiful gifts with heart. Karin donates 100% of her proceeds to Cadela Carlota, ensuring every purchase directly supports the animals in our care.
We are also calling for volunteers. Helping hands are needed to welcome visitors at the exhibition, to support our daily shelter work, and to join us at Continente Lagos on September 27–28, where we will once again be collecting food for our dogs and cats.
We respectfully recognise that our loyal volunteers already give so much of their time, which is why we urgently need more people to share the load. If you can spare a little time, please join us – your support makes all the difference.
