The first ever exhibition of original animation art in Portugal, showcasing original and limited editions of art by The Walt Disney Company and 20th Century Fox, is being held by ArtCatto in Loulé from November 9 to January 31.
On display will be original production cels used in the making of the classic Disney films, among them Robin Hood and Mickey’s Christmas Carol, as well as an extensive display of original production art from television’s longest running animated series, The Simpsons.
Gallery owner Gill Catto was noted for bringing animation art to the UK in the nineties with huge success.

Gill said: “I held Europe’s first ever animation exhibition in London in 1992 which was very well received. I am now truly proud to be able to bring the art to my gallery in Portugal. To see everyone’s faces when they see characters they grew up with and loved is a joy. It appeals to every age and gender. This is an opportunity to own a little piece of cinematic history.”
There will also be a selection of interpretive art and limited edition artwork.
With the advent of computer animation, the hand-painted cel has been replaced by electronic wizardry. In the early years of animated films, the animator’s pencil drawings were transferred onto acetate and hand-painted before being filmed under the camera on hand-painted backgrounds.
For years, these cels were destroyed as being of little value until in the late 80s when animation art was seen as one of the few original contributors to American contemporary art. Suddenly values rose and rare pieces were selling for several million dollars. Collectors have since created a huge demand for works from their favourite films and shorts.
Each piece of art is framed and has a certificate of authenticity.
ArtCatto is located at Avenida José da Costa Mealha, nº43 R/C.
