Fleas thrive in the heat – why year-round prevention matters

Fleas are more than just a nuisance. They can cause intense itching, allergic dermatitis, and in some cases pass on diseases or tapeworms to pets – and even to humans.

Two years ago, our biggest summer challenge at Cadela Carlota was ticks. This year, it’s fleas. The long spells of heat and humidity across Portugal have created the perfect conditions for these tiny pests to multiply at speed, making them a much bigger problem than usual.

Fleas are more than just a nuisance. They can cause intense itching, allergic dermatitis, and in some cases pass on diseases or tapeworms to pets – and even to humans. What many people don’t realise is that the majority of a flea population isn’t actually on the animal, but in the surrounding environment – in bedding, carpets, floorboards, and even in the garden. That’s why dealing with them means protecting your pet and your home at the same time.

At Cadela Carlota, prevention is always part of our year-round care for both dogs and cats. All our animals receive regular parasite treatments – and we always double up. Alongside their routine products, every dog and cat recently received an extra dose of Bravecto antiparasitic medication. We never leave parasite control to chance, because preventing a problem is far easier and kinder than curing one.

Whether your pet is a dog or a cat, indoor or outdoor, now is the time to check they are fully protected. Speak to your vet about the best flea and tick treatments for your pet’s size, age, and health. Options include spot-on solutions, oral tablets, and special collars. Cats in particular need products formulated just for them – some dog treatments contain ingredients toxic to felines.

Equally important is keeping your home clean: wash pet bedding weekly at high temperatures, vacuum floors and furniture regularly, and empty the vacuum bag immediately afterwards. Even indoor-only cats can get fleas, as these pests can hitch a ride indoors on clothing, shoes, or other pets.

Flea prevention isn’t just a summer job. In Portugal’s mild climate, fleas can survive year-round, but their numbers explode in the heat. Starting prevention early – before you see a single flea – is the safest, kindest, and most cost-effective approach.

By taking these steps, you’re not only protecting your own pet, but also helping to reduce the overall flea population in our community. That’s something your four-legged friends, your neighbours, and even our shelter animals will thank you for.
