Fostering saves lives – can you help Aurora?

Fostering is not the same as adopting. It’s a short-term commitment to care for an animal until they’re ready for a permanent home.

Aurora is a young, gentle cat who was rescued from a colony in Odiáxere, Lagos, after being hit by a car.

Thankfully, she’s doing well following surgery and a month in recovery. She does need a little extra help: liquid medication, mixed into her food twice a day, to help her go to the toilet comfortably.

In the shelter, surrounded by many other animals, it’s hard to give her the focused care she deserves. What Aurora really needs now is a quiet, safe space and a caring person to ensure she eats her meals – and her medicine. In return, you’ll get the satisfaction of helping a lovely cat through her final stage of recovery.

Fostering is not the same as adopting. It’s a short-term commitment to care for an animal until they’re ready for a permanent home. And crucially, all expenses – food, medication, vet costs – are covered by the shelter (in this case, Cadela Carlota in Lagos). Your role is to provide time, attention, and a calm environment.

There’s a common misconception that adopting is the only way to help. But fostering plays a vital role in the rescue process. Some animals need time to recover from surgery, build trust, or simply have a break from the stress of shelter life. That’s where foster families make an enormous difference.

And it’s not just cats like Aurora. We also regularly need foster homes for puppies and adult dogs – especially those recovering from injury or illness, or abandoned litters who are too young for adoption. Whether you’re a dog person, a cat person, or simply someone who wants to make a difference, fostering could be a great way to help without the long-term commitment of adoption.

There is a constant and growing need for foster homes. By opening your home temporarily, you’ll not only change one animal’s life – you’ll make room for the next one in need.
