Giant Easter Folar to be served in Quarteira

135-metre Folar will be shared with public in weekend celebration

A giant Easter Folar will take centre stage in Quarteira this weekend as the town celebrates one of the season’s best-known traditions.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 4 at around 3.30pm along Rua Vasco da Gama, where a massive folar Easter cake measuring 135 metres and weighing around 510kg will be unveiled.

The folar has been prepared by three local bakeries – Duodoce, Costa Doce and Valenciana. The process takes around 42 hours, from preparing and resting the dough to baking, assembling and decorating it on site.

In total, hundreds of kilos of ingredients are used, including 450kg of flour, 45kg of eggs and 180kg of sugar. The recipe also features orange juice and zest, milk and a spiced tea infused with cinnamon, fennel, star anise, lemon zest and honey.

Once baked, the cake is decorated with white and dark chocolate, traditional egg threads and a dusting of sugar.

Visitors will be able to taste the folar for free.
