Two GNR agents confronted with an ‘active shooter’ in Almada yesterday retaliated by shooting the man in the hand, thus disarming him.
At a point where the media is full of horror stories of the shooting of civilians by security forces in the United States, this one at least is understandable: the shooter in this story is described as an elderly man with Alzheimer’s disease.
The alert went out shortly before midday, due to the man ‘causing a disturbance’ outside his home.
When the GNR arrived, he is understood to have started shooting at them with a small calibre weapon (pistol or revolver).
“No-one was hit”, writes Correio da Manhã. “In legitimate self-defence, the agents responded with gunfire. The old man was hit in the right hand – and let go of his weapon”.
The 76-year-old was assisted by firefighters from Trafaria, and then transported to hospital, under arrest. He was accompanied by members of his family.
PJ police are now ‘investigating’ the incident.
When the elderly man has recovered, “he will have to answer in court for the shots fired at the policemen, which caused damages to various parked cars”, CM concludes.
