Influencer who laughed online about hit-and-run formally charged

Tiago Grila faces three crimes, including driving without valid licence

Months after his shock online admission that he had run over a pedestrian in the rain and kept driving, influencer Tiago Grila has been formally charged with three crimes – including one of driving without a valid licence.

This is a case that burst into the headlines over a year ago, reigniting a ‘closed case’ from the year before over a hit-and-run close to the Bingo in Amadora.

Following his bizarre ‘online confession’, his alleged victim went to police, identifying Grila as very possibly the driver who had left her lying, unconscious, in the road – and investigations have been moving slowly forwards ever since.

Now, the formal accusation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office leaves little room for manoeuvre. The text reads that the victim “was crossing the road on a pedestrian crossing when she was struck by the front of the car driven by the defendant, falling to the ground and losing consciousness (…) The victim got out of the vehicle, approached the victim and after standing alongside her for a few moments, returned to his car and drove off to parts unknown, without offering any assistance or calling the emergency services.”

The victim (much later identified as Marina Braga) suffered various injuries that “affected her capacity to work for more than a year”, says the accusation – adding that Grila, at the time of the incident, was not “in possession of a document legally authorising him to drive”.

Grila, described as a ‘content creator’ on the internet who presents himself as a “phenomenon” and a “marketing genius”, was made an official suspect last year, at which point he refused to make any kind of statement.
