This summer has been especially busy for our team at Cadela Carlota. Alongside the daily care of over 100 dogs and cats, we have responded to urgent fire-related requests for help.
Families affected by the recent fires were forced to evacuate quickly, often with little time to think about where their pets could stay. Thanks to our network of volunteers, we were able to provide temporary shelter for several dogs and cats, ensuring that both people and animals could find safety during this stressful time.
We want to sincerely thank every volunteer who has stepped forward – whether by transporting animals, offering foster space, or donating food and blankets. Your generosity is what makes our work possible.
We are also working closely with local partners such as Clínica do Ferrel in Espiche and together we are doing all we can to provide safe places for animals. Food drives remain vital, so please look out for collection points in local shops. Every bag of food donated helps us care for these animals in need.
Alongside emergencies, we continue to face an ongoing challenge: sterilisation. Despite repeated appeals, unsterilised female dogs and cats in private homes are still producing unwanted litters. Since the last litter was left at our shelter, we have received requests for help with four more litters of puppies and one litter of kittens.
Each case stretches our resources further, and it underlines why sterilisation is the single most effective way to prevent suffering.
Here, our supporters at Nandi Charity deserve a very special mention. In August alone, they financed the sterilisation of 39 dogs and 59 cats, in addition to providing more than €11,000 towards veterinary bills. Their ongoing sterilisation campaign makes a huge difference, but we need the community’s help to spread the word and encourage more owners to take responsibility. Fires remind us how quickly lives can be disrupted, but they also highlight the power of community. Together, through food drives, emergency shelter, and sterilisation, we can ensure that animals are protected not only today but also in the future.
