Maddie searches on day three in Lagos with little to show

Searches for Maddie in Lagos have yet to uncover anything of interest to authorities

For the third day running, Portuguese and German authorities are combing through abandoned ruins in Lagos, Algarve in a last-ditch effort to find answers in the Madeleine McCann case.

This latest operation is centred near the former home of Christian Brückner, the German national identified as the main suspect in Maddie’s disappearance. Using ground-penetrating radar and excavation equipment, investigators from the German federal police and Portugal’s PJ are now focusing on derelict properties previously left untouched.

The team started early, with diggers tearing into the earth from 9am, aiming to uncover any trace that might have been missed over the years. But thick vegetation and difficult terrain have made progress slow.

So far, searches across the nearly 50-hectare site in Atalaia – which include abandoned agricultural plots between Praia da Luz and Porto de Mós – have turned up little of note – just animal bones, old clothing, and other debris deemed unrelated to the investigation, reports SIC Notícias.

Brückner, who is currently serving time in a German prison for the rape of a US tourist in the Algarve, is nearing release, which has promoted German authorities into a race against time to find evidence to keep him behind bars, as there are fears he could flee to a country without an extradition agreement once freed.
