Madeleine McCann: new searches to begin in Lagos

Searches have been requested by German authorities

Nearly two decades after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, police are due to scan part of the Algarve coastline once again to search for new evidence in the long-running case.

The latest operation is set to begin this Tuesday (June 3), focusing on an area between Praia da Luz, in Lagos, and a house once occupied by Christian Brückner, the man German investigators continue to name as the prime and only suspect in the disappearance.

The searches have been requested by German authorities and will be led by Portugal’s PJ criminal police force.

It’s been 18 years since Maddie, aged three at the time, vanished from a holiday apartment on May 3, 2007, and authorities are hoping fresh searches could finally yield clues.

According to CNN Portugal, investigators are focusing on a path between Brückner’s former residence and the nearby cliffs of Praia da Luz – a route he may have used to dispose of the body, according to one working theory.

This marks another critical phase in what German police have described as a race against time to build a solid case against the convicted sex offender.
